Ravi Karunanayake acquitted in foreign exchange case
Minister Ravi Karunanayake was acquitted in the foreign exchange case at the Colombo High Court after the case was taken up again before Judge Irangani Perera on Monday (May 18).
According to Judge Irangani, the decision was reached upon taking into consideration the objections raised by the lawyers of the defence with regard to anomalies in the indictment produced against Minister Ravi Karunanayake. Justice Perera also said that the Attorney General has the capability to file a case once again and that an appeal could also be filled by the AG, if the need arises.
Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake spoke to the media following the court hearing, saying that the court case which was filed without any proper reason has proven futile. The minister also stated that while he is present at courts for the 27th time with his lawyers, the former defense secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is running away.
Today’s judgement was also the final judgment handed down by justice Irangani Perera as she bid farewell to her service as a judge and retired following 31 years of service.
